MASSIVE, COORDINATED CRACKDOWN ON HOUSE CHURCHES |
|
According to information
received from Dr. Bob Fu, Director of the
China Aid Association, a massive crackdown has
occurred in Jilin Province in Northeast China.
On Sunday, May 22nd, at 5 a.m. while house
church leader, Zhao Dianru, 58, was praying at
his home, about a dozen of Chinese police
and public security officials raided and
searched his house. Although no search warrant
was presented, his home was searched and about
20 boxes of Christian books were confiscated.
Pastor Zhao has been overseeing some
18 house churches in his area. None
of these are related to the major house
churches of China, but are independent groups
of university students, professors and other
young intellectuals. The pastor was not
charged with any irregularities related to
Christianity or church activities, but "for
using other means to instigate and disturb
social stability." It is not clear what that
means, but it appears to be an effort to avoid
the appearance of being anti-Christian.
The Chinese government has
gone to great lengths in claiming to the
world community that Chinese people are
enjoying religious freedom. It is true that
in the cities, the registered church does
enjoy a great measure of religious liberty,
and many godly pastors and leaders in those
churches are taking advantage of the
opportunity to expand their churches, both
numerically and physically. However, the
unregistered house churches continue to
suffer intense persecution and pastors and
leaders continue to be arrested and detained
for long periods of time.
Pastor Zhao was taken away and
detained at Jiutai City Detention
center of Jilin Province until June 6 when
he was released. Meanwhile, according to
China Aid investigators, police and Public
Security Bureau (PSB) officers
simultaneously raided about 100 house
churches in Changchun area, the capital city
of Jilin Province in northeastern China.
Almost 600 house church believers and
leaders were taken into custody. Most were
released after 24 to 48 hours of
interrogation, but about 100 of the leaders
including professors from Changchun
University are still held in different
detention centers.
China Aid Association is
calling on the world community of Christians
and Christian organizations to urge the
Chinese government to immediately release
these innocent religious leaders. "It’s time
for China to live up to the commitments and
treaties it has signed on religious freedom,"
states Mr. Fu. He asks that people write or
call the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in the
US at the following locations, and ask for the
release of these imprisoned Christians:
