BACK TO JERUSALEM – HOW IT GOT STARTED

The well-known expression “Back to Jerusalem” that fills the hearts and minds of China’s house church pastors is not new. In the early 1940’s, a small group of students led by Pastor Mark Ma, the vice-principal of the Northwest Bible Institute in Shaanxi Province, consecrated themselves to carrying the gospel outside China’s borders into the Islamic world, all the way back to Jerusalem. While in prayer, Pastor Ma heard the clear call of God to enter and preach the gospel in Xinjiang Province, the vast Muslim region of northwest China. It was, and still is inhabited by millions of Muslims. The majority speak languages from the Turkic linguistic family, such as Urgur, Kazak, Kirgiz, and Uzbek. Other Muslim groups include the Chinese-speaking Hui people. A large number of Tibetan Buddhist nomads also inhabit the area.

In March 1947, after several years of prayer and preparation, two men and five women set out on the long westward trek to Xinjiang. Each carried only one small bag and a washbasin. This was the first group of messengers, who called themselves the Back To Jerusalem Band, to enter this difficult territory with the gospel. Riding camels, the little band was turned back by government authorities who refused them entrance because of political developments. Sadly, they returned to Shaanxi, but a great volume of prayer resulted from this seeming defeat, both in and outside of China. The little band continued to pray fervently for an open door during the months that followed, but God’s timing was different. The Communist army swept down from the north and conquered the land setting in motion one of the darkest periods in China’s history. The Cultural Revolution under Mao plunged the nation into the horrible pit of darkness and anguish. All churches were forcibly shut down except for one or two that were allowed to remain open in Beijing for propaganda purposes. One of the darkest periods in the church’s history in China ensued and the vision of Pastor Mark Ma dimmed under the horrible persecution that took place. Looking back, Chinese leaders recognize that the church was not ready to succeed in God’s great call for evangelization in the Muslim lands on the way back to Jerusalem. At that time, the church had approximately 2 million believers in all of China, but by 1985 when China began to open up again, that small number had unexpectedly grown until today it is estimated that 100 million are followers of Jesus!

Many pastors who had caught the vision spent 20 or more years in prison for their faith, and though the light seemed to have been extinguished, actually it was burning passionately in their hearts, and they knew that the day would come when China would emerge from the night of persecution, and the vision would burst on the church once again. Without a doubt, that vision was sharpened by the persecution and by much earnest prayer from prison cells across the land until the day of release finally dawned. Then, it burst with renewed intensity in the hearts of men and women who now understood the pain and the blessings of suffering. Today, the church is consumed with a white-hot passion to do God’s will and to send forth 100,000 messengers with the Gospel. As this is being written, valiant men and women are already on the front lines of ministry in Xinjiang and other countries to the west. And just as Jesus said in Matthew 16, not even the gates of hell can prevent the onward advance of the gospel through these lands that have been so resistant to the gospel. It is happening, and you can have a part in carrying the vision forward through messengers in those lands by your prayers and your gifts.

EE’S CHINA PROPOSAL

One of the vital aspects of the Back to Jerusalem movement is the increasing passion in the Chinese church for evangelism. They have welcomed the help of Evangelism Explosion in reaching their homeland for Christ and thus increasing the pool of prospects for new workers. By the end of 2007, EE hopes to have trained 60 pastors from the Three-Self Patriotic Church (government registered churches), and 240 house church pastors (non-registered churches). Hundreds will be won to Christ during the training periods alone, but after pastors and leaders have been trained, they anticipate a great harvest of 20,000 people won to Christ. To accomplish this, training clinics for pastors and leaders will be set up, materials in Chinese will be printed and travel for leadership personnel will cost many thousands of dollars. EE International is praying for God to supply $7,500.00 to be matched by special donors. Once the pastors and leaders are trained, their congregations will begin the multiplication process. Imagine winning 20,000 people to Christ for such an unbelievably small sum! But imagine what will happen when those 20,000 are trained to become soul-winners! You are urged to contact tmangham@eeinternational.org for more information and prayer requests and the way to contribute to this great cause.

THE IMPACT OF CHRISTIAN RADIO

It is estimated that at least 50% of the believers in China were introduced to Jesus Christ through Christian radio beamed into China from several stations in the world. It is especially important to understand the impact of radio especially in rural areas where there may not be churches or Bibles readily available to the people. A recent letter from a listener inside China states, “What a blessing that we can meet each other in the ‘Church in the Air!” I have been a listener for 3-4 years. Though we are thousands of miles apart, we are still one in Christ. My family and I turn to your programs every day. I find the program ‘Compass of Life’ most touching and helpful. Since we live in a rural area, our knowledge of the church is very shallow. We attend a small rural church service and have devotional time at home, but we don't have enough spiritual materials to help us. We wonder if you can help us out?” You can have a vital part in the preparation of these programs that are blessing so many people, and you can even contribute toward the high costs of these programs by contacting Alliance Radio at http://www.cmaradiohk.org or by e-mail at info@cmaradiohk.org

AN UNFORESEEN TOOL FOR SPREADING THE GOSPEL

The Digital Bible Society is very busy producing the Bible on CDs for China and Arabic speaking nations. The Chinese Treasures CD contains 3 Searchable Chinese Bibles in both simplified and traditional type, 3 Chinese commentaries, and hundreds of books. Who would have thought that the sixteenth century invention of the movable printing press would liberate the world through the Bible and bring about the great Reformation. Luther, Calvin and Zwingli made ready use of this new device to spread the Scriptures and their reformation ideas throughout Europe. In the twentieth century another kind of printing press burst on the scene- the personal computer. In the space of only two decades, the PC dramatically transformed the economic and social order of our world. September 2002, the one billionth computer was manufactured. That feat took twenty five years but it is estimated that the second billion will be built by the year 2008! Figures just release by China Today.org  indicate that China has 111 million Internet users with 49.5 million computers in the country, and growing rapidly. The Digital Bible Society is presently distributing the Bible on CD in China without cost.  Those CDs can be copied and passed on. Imagine what a break through this is for the distribution of the Bible in the most inexpensive way possible! It is time to pray for this ministry and get involved. For a very exciting experience, check out www.digitalbiblesociety.org

A NATION THAT DOESN'T STOP GROWING

China is already the nation with the largest population in the history of the world and there is no end in view! The one child per family policy which has been strictly observed is credited with preventing 400 million births. Although the birth rate has been curbed from an average of six children per family to the present 1.8 children per family, new problems with devastating effect have been developing. Because Chinese custom demands that a couple have a male child, the one-child policy rigidly enforced throughout the country, has created a serious problem. Selective abortion of females has created a serious imbalance of men and women. There are not enough men for the women, and not enough younger workers to meet the needs of the country’s exploding manufacturing phenomenon. In addition, one only-child families are finding it extremely difficult to care for aging parents. As a result of these problems, a major shift in policy in the city of Guangzhou is taking shape in an effort to balance the aging population. Parents who are the only children of their families are being encouraged to have a second child! According to government policy, couples from one-child families in 27 provinces are allowed to have a second child. And in another development in Guangzhou, the municipality is considering providing poorer, only-child families with financial aid. Tampering with nature has begun to produce unexpected and disastrous results for the country, and the end is not yet in view. Pray for this nation in crisis that the gospel will penetrate darkened hearts and all areas of the country. Pray that Bibles will become more plentiful to meet this constantly growing need, and pray that the Chinese church will be allowed more freedom to evangelize children without interference.
